Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Dead is not your average zombie novel, and I think that's why I loved it and could barely stand to put it down.

The novel takes us back to 1959 Manhattan during a time when the scariest things around were the Cold War and KGB, or so we are lead to believe. Avery Nolan is a scotch-swilling, Lucky Strike-smoking former cop turned private detective. Hired to find a missing scientist, Avery has no clue that he is about to enter a tangled web that involves KGB, mafia goons, beautiful women, and of course, an experiment that literally raises the dead.

I have to admit that I wasn't sure how I would feel about the story initially. It's not full of bloody, gory zombie kills, but don't despair. Readers are treated to some painstakingly detailed accounts of several ghoul take-downs. However, the biggest treat is following Detective Nolan's journey and how he relates to his best friend, NYPD Sergeant Rex Randall, and to his potential love interest, a librarian named Maggie, all while fighting off Russian thugs, alleged DBI agents, and a woman named Anna Winters, who may not be the woman that Avery believes her to be.

Author Tony Faville does a wonderfully superb job of grabbing the readers attention and holding onto it with brilliant detail that you can almost see and feel. While reading this book, I felt as if I was actually inside Avery Nolan's head, viewing his 50's noir world and all of his experiences through his eyes. Written very well in first person, this story has a great momentum that comes to a thrilling climax and doesn't disappoint. And of course, the heroic detective always gets the girl, right?

Avery Nolan: Private Dick of the Dead is currently out of print, but should be coming back soon from a new publisher.
